Shopping day - started by buying Murray a hat. Went to Koenji where there are lots of second hand shops. Violet bought some everyday sort of clothes. We couldn't convince her to buy the beautiful red leather cap, even though it looked absolutely amazing on her. Murray didn't end up buying the black trench coat. I didn't buy the red boots with cats on them - they were so tiny. I did buy a nice red beret. We went to Asagaya and had dinner at Alex's place. Her husband is lovely, her house gorgeous. We had sushi delivered - big round platters. I even at the natto one - couldn't really taste the natto much It was quite nice in sushi - not like on its own. Alex showed us round all the cute this bars/streets back to the train station from home. Slept so well in this bed, dark room, comfiness. 20,351 steps 13.68 km
Got coffees nearby the airbnb. Staying in Roma Norte - nice suburb, lots of restaurants and liveliness. Caught the bus to Buenavista station and walked up Cinco de Mayo, past the Palacio de Bellas Artes, through the park, down the busy street to the Zocalo. Our first stop was to the little museum that houses Diego Rivera's mural "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park (SueƱo de una tarde dominical en la Alameda Central)" Visit some of the markets along the park, including some beautiful bead-work jewellery and about a million little stalls selling pop-vinyls, star wars figures and other action figures, lego, etc. including broken bits, limbs, parts... Saw/heard so many organ-grinders, some with toy monkeys. Went into the Catedral Metropolitana de la Ciudad de Mexico, briefly saw the Aztec ruins next to it but will go back for a proper visit to them later. We couldn't get into the Bellas Artes and thought the Cathedral was inaccessible too because they'd put u...
Murray suffering badly from hayfever. We went shopping and bought him a hat. Went to Kinkaku-ji and Ryoanji. Lots of tourists and the former, less at the latter and we managed to get some fairly peaceful sitting in front of the rock garden time. The gardens are as beautiful as I remember - massive pond (we saw a pair of geese, violet said they were on a date), beautiful small-leafed maple trees, moss. We had a quick 7/11 lunch, sandwiches, can o coffee, violet had a pork bun and a little doughnut thing. Violet and I walked to a local okonomiyaki place for dinner. We sat at a back table and ate off the hot-plate. It was a fun experience. 16,748 steps 11.26 klms
